What is "Ascension"
Ascension is a transformative visual journey that blends elements of space, ocean, and the desert to explore themes of rebirth, ancestry, and spiritual awakening. The film begins with an astronaut in the vastness of space, who falls through a cosmic wormhole at the precise moment of the green flash—a rare optical phenomenon during sunset. This cataclysmic moment leads to a deep plunge into the ocean, where the astronaut sinks to the deepest point, experiencing death and transcendence.
At this moment of death, an octopus breaks through the Earth’s crust, pulls the astronaut into its head, and begins the process of regeneration. The octopus swims to a circle of whales, who are sleeping vertically, and as they sing, the water around them drains. In this sacred space, the astronaut is reborn—emerging at the feet of their ancestors in Puerto Rico. This rebirth represents the start of a deeper connection to the land and an awakening to the ancestral wisdom that flows through them.
Guided by the spirit of the land, the astronaut follows a path through a cave that leads them into the desert, signaling the beginning of a journey to become an ancestor themselves. The desert, with its vast, empty expanses, serves as a metaphor for both a personal and collective transformation.
